INDIAN MOUND AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY (IMARS)
09 March 2015

[Well, I posted a new BLOG page last night but it is not here!  Where did it go?  NO IDEA ;-)]

|SK|  Member John L. "Jack" Allen KK4EKV, died on Sunday March 8th, 2015.  John retired to DeLand from his home in New Jersey.  Jack served on submarines in WW II and was a traffic engineer in NJ before he retired.  No obituary or notice of services has been published as of today.

We had a good meeting, turn out was about normal for these days.  We are making an effort to attract some new members.

Alan KI4ZSK, has volunteered to make us a sandwich board sign that can be set out on meeting days and can also be used at any public event.  Alan showed the design that he had come up with.  Our traditional logo, designed by Bill Kehm, N4ZZO could not be used because the resolution of the file Alan has doesn't have good enough resolution.  I have located a JPG file of the logo at 300dpi 1500x1510 that might be usable and sent that to Alan.

I have placed meeting notices in the News Journal and the West Volusia Beacon, let me know if you see them please..  Jack  WD8QY, has put a voice announcement on the repeater.   It there is anything else you think we could do please bring it to our attention at a meeting or in an eMail.

I read an eMail received from Joe Chaput N9ZGU who will be 90 years old next week.  The health of his wife prevents him from coming to Florida for the forseeable future.  He is proud of his son who has gotten his 1st (Chief) Mate's license and will be a Master when he has enough time as Chief.

Bob WB9SOE, responded to a question about the new Apple Watch and that led to a discussion about security in general.  Bob pointed out that the new smart phone apps, Google Wallet and Apple Pay allow you to pay bills and purchase items without exposing your credit card numbers.  A one time number is generated for each transaction so if the bad guys get ahold of that number they will not be able to do anything with it.  Bob also strongly recommended that everyone FREEZE their credit so no one would be able to establish an account with information they stole.

By coincidence Anthem, had a full page add in todays DB N-J (9 Mar 2015) notifying everyone that Anthem's accounts had been hacked and that anyone who has an account with them or with Blue Cross or Blue Shield was a possible victim.  Anthem also strongly recommended that you FREEZE your credit and gave the following links to the three credit companies:

EQUIFAX Credit Freeze  EXPERIAN Credit Freeze TRANSUNION Credit Freeze

PS:  Someone asked about Bob Thornton K4KUB and nobody knew what had become of him.  Today (Tue 10 Mar) I received a response from Bob to my inquiry to inactive members:

Please keep me on distribution.  Until recently, my work didn’t allow me to attend, but that is changing.
All the best and 73,
Bob
