IMARS MEETING 17 NOV 2014

Our web site:  http://imars.x10.mx/

It was hard to write this, my pussy cat Samantha (Sammy) decided I needed company so came and parked her tail on my keyboard.
We had a pretty good meeting, 11 present.  Alan KI4ZSK, our host and chief coffee maker, had the coffee ready and Bernie KJ4QML brought the donuts.  Bonnie Taylor WB4FSF, was back from her trip to Egypt. She passed around some pictures and told of her experiences.  I had pictures from a friend in Osteen of the biggest blacksnake I've ever seen, probably 8 feet long.

Bud Thompson NØIA told us about a Volusia County EOC training session scheduled for 7 January at the Volusia EOC.  They would like to have hams attend.  The session will run 0800 until noon.  If you're interested contact Bud to arrange a possible car pool. (His number is on our web site.)

Don Partain KJ4FKT brought an antenna made from wire and PCV pipe. It all fits in a large tote bag and can be quickly erected almost anywhere.  The antenna was designed by Ed KJ4IEU.  I found a YouTube video showing the parts needed but can't find the follow on videos.  I've Tweeted Ed and asked for direction to the entire series.  You can see the first video at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgLk21zMa6g

Carlos Colón WA4ZKV put on a talk about old time radio.  He began with a detailed account of resistors and went on to explain how the "American Five" tube lineup was constructed to allow both AC and DC operation.  He will continue his talk in a series at future meetings.  Carlos is very knowledgeable in this area and was quite insistent that we pay attention ;-)

Don Colvin KC4UUM, spoke about a SkyWarn conference and open house at the National Weather Service station at Melbourne on Saturday December 6th 2014 at 421 Croton Road, Melbourne.  The open house will run from 10 am until 4 pm.

We discussed the annual Christmas picnic which will be on the 8th of December at the same place we meet every week. (The DeBary EOC next to the fire station and adjacent to the new City Hall.)  We will meet at 10 a.m. and plan to eat at 11 a.m.  Bring plates, utensils and a dish to share.  Kenny and Shirley will be roasting a turkey again this year.  I will being the soft drinks and water, Alan will have a pot of coffee ready.  We have invited WestVars and hope that several will attend.

HERE ARE THREE MORE PICTURES.   SEE YA NEXT WEEK.

HERE AGAIN, THE IMARS BLOG

REVIEW OF BLOG HISTORY

(BLOG = INTERNET LOG)

I started this BLOG in 2005. as a way of communicating and also of building a record of the Indian Mound Amateur Radio Society. At today's meeting I asked whether anyone looks at this and received NO or blank stares. I have been remiss for not making sure everyone knows about this BLOG and has an opportunity to contribute their 2 cents worth. Please leave comments, suggestions, dislikes, commendations etc Let's see if we can breathe some life back into IMARS before it withers and dies completely.

SICK LIST

We're very happy that Hank has gotten a pace maker and is recovering and feeling better. He's hoping to be able to drive by next week.

We have not heard from Tom Golding for a while. He has moved back north, whether permanently or part time we don't know.

We don't know whether Jack Allen KK4EKV has quit the group or is ill. Let us hear from you Jack.

PROBLEMS WITH IMARS

Carlos brought up some of the problems with the Society. First, we don't pay enough attention to Amateur Radio and too much about everything else. Some of us consider the Society more of a coffee klatch and social club that a radio club. Is that what you want? We can change if you are willing to contribute. Since Bob Cook is travelling we have had very few "program" presentations. If you'd like to change that please let your imagination run wild, think of something you care about and create a short "show and tell" or lesson on some aspect of Amateur Radio or a hobby of yours. How did you get into Ham Radio? What aspect of the hobby interests you or has interested you in the past. Make a little outline and prepare to stand up during the program section of the meeting and tell us about it. Many of us have done that ad nauseam. If you're sick of that say so, make suggestions as to how we can improve, take a leadership position and help make IMARS better. Only you can do it.

THANKS TO THE WORKER BEES

One of the things we could do better is acknowledging those who do contribute. First on the list is Alan Williamson. We owe our meeting place to him and really appreciate him making the coffee every week. SEVERAL REMARKED TODAY THAT THE COFFEE WAS MUCH BETTER THAN IT HAS BEEN, thanks again Alan.

Bernie has been filling the position of president, though we don't really have a president. Thank you Bernie for all you do.

Thanks are due to Hank who has brought the donuts for years and much thanks to Tony who volunteered to replace Hank as "doughnut engineer" ;-) Tony was missing today so Bernie brought the doughnuts, thank you Bernie for being there to back Tony, we would be slim (I mean) sad if we didn't have the donuts ;-)

Bill Kehm was there today and updated our SILENT KEYS list, Bill has faithfully kept that list up to date for years.

IMARS WEB SITES

Please do not forget to visit our web sites, yes, there are two, a primary and a backup. Both sites are on free hosting sites. We MUST have traffic or we will lose the space. I have set up both Chrome and Fire Fox to bring up both sites every time they come up. I can always X close them down if they are in the way but get a hit count each time I activate the browsers. It would be very helpful if you would do the same. The sites are:

http://imars.x10.mx/ and
http://imarsradio.byethost6.com/

If you type in "IMARSVOLUSIA.COM" you will be taken to the first site. I can redirect that to the second site if we lose the X10 hosting. X10 requires me to access the account every month. I have that on my Google Calendar so I get a pop up reminder the first of every month. If I should go the way of Joel and drop dead on the way home from a meeting someone else can take over the Web Master job by using the information on the CD that resides inside the big white IMARS History notebook at the front of the DeBary EOC meeting room. It needs to be updated which I will do ASAP.

Please comment about IMARS. let's get a conversation going.
